Skinny Fat is a thing?

I can’t sleep right now because I’ve just discovered something about myself that has been stressing me out lately. Skinny Fat is a thing!

So basically, skinny fat is when you don’t weigh very much, but have absolutely no muscle mass so you’re still all wobbly and bobbly. It’s super annoying because everyone will be like “Oh, you’re so skinny” but they don’t see you with your clothes off and your little mates, pouchy and muffin top 1 & 2. 

It should come as no shock that basically my issue is that I’ve never picked up a weight in my entire life. The thought of it scares me but I’ve just done a litthe reading and have come up with an excelent plan. 

So, I already go running 3x a week which is excellent. All I need to do is add resistance training 3x a week, and start eating properly (like, making my own meals, not skipping meals, eating snacks etc.)

The only problem I can foresee is at work where I work 11-4 or 11-5 with no proper break so eating properly for lunch then is difficult. Just got to find some good vegan recipes that won’t need refrigerating.

Anyway I’m just really excited about starting to his, probably in July and I was excited to share the news. Hopefully I’ll be a little beefcake soon enough. 



Deciding on a Niche

Hey guys,

Sorry for not posting lately, due to the massive amounts of sun we are getting in Brighton right now, I have been either at work or cooking in the UV.

Work is going really excellently. It is so much nicer here, I feel more chilled out, the customers are friendlier, and I am just more relaxed and happier as a person. It’s even had a knock-on effect on Guy, who has suddenly chilled waaaaay out. I even caught him having a G&T and a menthol cigarette out on the balcony the other day. Weird.

I’ve also been on a couple of really nice day trips, we went to Camber Sands last week, which was nice but would have been nicer if the wind was blowing at about 80mph less than what it was. And we visited Worthing beach yesterday which is like Brighton beach but a lot more quiet, which I love, and with a bit of sand, which I also love. I think Worthing gets a lot of flack for being a seaside town, but I love those kinds of seaside towns with the main high street and the cheap little seaside cafés and the fish and chip shops. It’s nice. Just bought an inflatable whale for my next adventure.

Anyway, back to the blog of today! Finding a niche!

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, but I am doing a Product Design course, basically because it was the only A-Level I had which wasn’t Maths, and I hated Maths. It’s alright, I… quite enjoy it, but I’m not very good at it because the passion isn’t really there.

My real passion lies in illustrative work, I’ve always loved it but hated it at school and let it shape my whole education. But because I’m so indecisive I have no idea what I actually would like to do with it! So far I’ve wanted to be a commission-based painter, a graphic designer and a sign painter/type creator (I’m still really keen on that idea), but right now I would love to be a tattoo artist. I’ve done a lot of research and I’ve never been so keen on anything. I love making designs and reading about them, and looking at them and it’s the most imaginative and creative I’ve ever felt, so I’m really happy about that. I really feel like I’ve just found something I totally click with. I just don’t know how… to… progress from here.

Do you guys have any advice? Anyone else struggle to find something they were really good at? Or any tattoo artists out there who have any advice for somebody who might want to start out?

An Optimistic Time

Hello there, sorry I haven’t been on here for a while, I have been incredibly fucking busy as I got a new job! A job that I’m so pleased with, it makes me glad that I didn’t get the first one. Which is a great sign!

I’ve had quite a difficult time over these last few weeks with work becoming unbearable – and this is my only actual day off in 17 (!) days between the two, so my stress levels have skyrocketed and my stupid spotty face is showing it. I had a bit of a panic as well about the new job – I was anxious about the pace being so much slower and not having anyone to talk to – but that is one of the main reasons I wanted a change of scene – I needed somewhere like this. I think my panics were born out of… I feel like I’m spending my days off at my new place of work (which I am), and I’m fiercely protective of my days off, but that’s a very temporary fixture.

I think I just haven’t had time to be creative at all recently and it’s getting to me a little bit. But I know that the worst is almost over – just six more days of work and then I’m back to a normal routine, where my “day off” job becomes my actual job, and I get my days off as well!

Either way, I can’t wait for that. I’m the worst person for pessimism and I’m trying my absolute hardest to change that and I think it’s beginning to work. I’m genuinely happy for the first time in ages (mostly!) and I am looking forward to being able to take it slow for a bit.

I’m a very “black and white” person as well, and for some reason assumed that I had no friends at work and wouldn’t really miss anyone, just because I was feeling so crappy about everything. I’ve now realised how many people I’m going to miss – and a few people have made plans with me to meet up after I leave – and I never have plans! I feel really positive about it, and it makes me not want to leave, just a tiny bit… but I know I’m making the best decision. And I can’t wait!

Hot, isn’t it?

Jesus, I went for my run this morning and it was bloody horrible. It’s so hot! I’m totally new to all this so I thought I’d write my plan down here, if any of you are runners or are more healthy than me or just have any tips I’d really appreciate if you could share them so I could see what I’m doing right and wrong?

Okay, so I work at B&Q four days a week, with Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays off. On working days that is pretty much the only exercise I will do – it is a very active job (as previously mentioned, like, I am WAY too small to be dragging around fence posts all day but that’s my life) – and I walk a mile to and from work every day. So I don’t usually do much after work.

5 days a week I do the workout that Pretty Muddy suggests you do – it’s less than 10 minutes long, one sec, I’ll show you what it is.

And then on my days off, every day I will follow the C25K app, which means that right now I’m running for 9 minutes out of 28. Which isn’t so bad considering I started off doing 0 minutes out of 0. But Pretty Muddy is in 5 weeks… do you think I will be able to run it in that time? And do you have any more tips for me? What sort of vegan diet will be best do you think? I eat a lot of couscous and salad and fruit and porridge but I feel tired a lot of the time. Like, all the time. (Although I’m not sure that has anything to do with my diet, I have always been on the tired side.) I take vitamins but my shifts are all over the place and sometimes I forget. Is there any diet you follow that keeps you healthy but doesn’t tire you out so much that you can’t do what you want?

Every Cloud?

Okay, so I’ve just been feeling like I’ve had “one of those days” today. Everything feels like it is going wrong, and I get into such a negative mood about things myself, that I just let escalate and I just bought an avocado for dinner that was frozen and it nearly tipped me over the edge so I’m writing an optimistic blog post to cheer myself up.

So I’ve been out on the town, sending out CVs today. I did quite a few and found a couple of places I would really like to work at so I’ve got my fingers crossed for this.

I don’t own an ironing board but it straightened itself out. What do you think of my CV outfit?

So far I have been offered 6 interviews. I’m not going to take them all but I’ve got one on Wednesday for a vintage clothes shop which is pretty cool. But it’s good to know that something I’m doing is working! Probably my eyeliner today. Was on point.

I also have been super-tired recently, like all day every day, and today was one of the worst, but I still managed to sort myself out and I went for a little run to train for Pretty Muddy. And obviously it really woke me up and I did feel a bit better afterwards. This is also going to sound ridiculous, but I’m on the third week of the C25K app, which starts off at the very, very, very basic jogging, and this week the longest you run for is 3 minutes. Until today, the longest I’d ever run for in 5 years was 90 seconds, and I was actually nervous about running for 3 minutes. How pathetic is that? But three weeks ago, I was struggling to run for a minute and today 3 minutes was actually okay!

These last couple of months have been so so so tough at work as well, at least all my being-busy of today have kept up my May step-count average. I’m absolutely smashing it like, beyond, which is probably why I’m so tired. Fucking 25k average. Working at B&Q! No wonder I’m so tired!

I don’t know how well this is written, by the way, I’m sorry for that, but Survivor NZ is on and I’m really into it.

I’ve gotta go now, they’re making people duel.

Interview & Life-Ruining Lack of Vegan Bento

So, today I had an interview for a lovely shop in Brighton. It was really exciting actually, I don’t want to get my hopes up too much but the people were really nice and it looks like such a cool place to work, so up my street. Looking very professional too, here, have a look:

Nice, huh? So yeah, I really hope I get a call tomorrow to let me know I have it. I just wanted to show off how professional I looked!

Anyway, today I was hoping to review the Vegan Bento dish that I get every week from the Japanese shop from across the street. It’s absolutely delicious and I literally look forward to it all week long, but today I’d hyped myself up, went for my interview, even did a whole 9-minute run, and thought I’d treat myself, and they’d ran out of the Vegan one!! Guy isn’t strictly anything diet-wise, so he got the shrimp one which I hear is still delicious, but not quite as delicious. I was so upset! I’ll let you know what is in the dish anyway in case you are ever down, erm… I can’t remember the name of the street. It might be Fleet Street? Near the big Sainsbury’s just off London Road. It’s worth looking for, but if it’s a Thursday and there’s one Vegan one left, please leave it for me.

But, anyway! It’s basically a lot of boiled sticky rice, with this purple topping that I think is seaweed based and soy beans. They cook their tofu in some ridiculously tasty sauce, and the best way to eat it is to mix the tofu up in the rice with the beans. You get those pumpkin slices as well – and a sweet potato salad, they taste best together. Then there’s a tiny bit of pickled vegetable, it’s different every time and I’ve only been able to find one online – for £8 a vegetable. It’s also got a tiny, tasty spring roll and what I think is a vegetable won-ton. I like to eat those bits on their own. And all that for a fiver! I’m feeling so sad just thinking about it. I wish I was eating one right now.

But anyway, I’d seen this place on Trafalgar Street called Cafe Trafé yesterday, and they have a serve-yourself bar of salads, which is something I am very into. I’ve literally never seen this place before, which is weird because I’ve always got my beady little eyes on the lookout for vegan food, so I thought I’d go and try one of these salads to cheer myself up. It was a bit busy in there with businessmen who were all stood around on their phones, but I just handed the nice lady behind the till £4 and grabbed a salad box.

It’s weird, especially living in Brighton, you’d’ve (it’s red-squiggly-lining that word but I’m leaving it) thought that there were loads of places to eat vegan foods. Which is true – there’s places like the Loving Hut, and the food at the Hope and Ruin, but unless it’s specifically Vegan there’s probably one, maybe two options on most menus? So it was nice to see a non-strictly-vegetarian place have so many choices. I think I ended up having like, a mixture of 5 different salads, and I had kale for the first time which was so tasty!

The box doesn’t look too big but I think most people would overestimate how many beans and rice they could eat in one go. I think I ended up with a sweet potato and courgette mix (tasty), and some courgette curls (I am obsessed with spiral food, ask anyone, I am totally obsessed with the thought of getting a JML spiraliser), lots of beans, some spicy rice with raisins in and kale and those spicy little balls you get in Tuna Mayo sometimes, I don’t know what they’re called. It was all so good, I just love serve-yourself stuff anyway, it makes me feel so special. And I’m like, 99% certain it was the healthiest lunch anybody has ever eaten ever. So I would recommend there as well!

I don’t really know why I’m doing these reviews to be honest. I enjoy it though, I feel like I’m getting something done even though I know full well that I’m procrastinating a painting I’ve got to finish off. I enjoy it anyway. Hope you do too.

For the Birds – Review

Guy and I decided on a little date night tonight, which was nice and a pretty rare occurrence. We had seen this big billboard poster for something called “For the Birds”, but it didn’t really have any information, so we checked it out online, which didn’t really have any information, but it looked pretty mysterious so we booked tickets. We found out that it was basically a sculpture, light and sound show but we had no idea what to expect. 

The tickets made me a bit nervous, as they aren’t… so clear with timings and places etc. – as you essentially grab a bus from the Asda (not very mysterious.) But it was cool, you wait around in queues for a while and then you arrive at the destination and follow a trail of fairy lights.

The thing is, I’m not so good at just… looking at things, which made me worry if I would like it. If it’s something I’m really interested in, or something beautiful or really interactive, then I love it. And it actually was really interesting! You are led around the forest by lights, noises and sculptures, some of which are robotic, some use clever light trickery, some are just spinning so fast they become a sound show as well. Each light is meticulously placed so the walkers get the best out of the show, as you are entertained by a range of different noises and lights.

I didn’t know what to expect with this, but I was quite pleasantly surprised! The lights were beautiful, and every time I thought the show was over, there was a little more to come. The only problem is – and it’s something I should have expected – is that it is posho-centralé. We had to watch three spivs argue over and then all agree that the i360 was Worthing Pier. Unbelievable.

Lovely though, really nice show.

La La Land – Review

So, I’m sat here having just finished my introductory blog post and I’m already itching to write a new one. And I watched La La Land last night, and since my blog name is literally based off the first song of the film, (Ey? Did you get that? Eyyyyyy!) and my obsession with this film is one of my defining features, it’s as good a place as any to start.

You can probably tell, but I love this film. Like, I really love it. I didn’t think I would – I tried to see it once in the local cinema, and it was sold out, and I lost all interest. Until I went to Strasbourg with my Other Half, (I can never decide the word I want to use when talking about Guy. I think they’re all kind of gross. I’ll just say Guy, his name’s Guy.) and we were bored one evening, a minute’s walk away from 2 cinemas. We chose one, we were the first people in there, and watched the film.

So, here’s another thing about me, I can’t watch films. Like, I cannot follow films, at all. I can try my best but I’m so easily distracted, I couldn’t recall a single film plot of anything I’ve watched in the last 5 years. Even with Harry Potter, which I’ve seen literally over a hundred times, I struggle to recall what the actual plot is.

With La La Land though, weirdly, I was totally hooked. Like, I haven’t experienced anything like it. The group next to us chatted loudly throughout the entire film, and the last person to sit down in the cinema was literally one of the tallest men I’ve ever seen and out of hundreds of empty seats chose the one directly in front of me. Usually this would drive me nuts – but I was so obsessed with this movie, I barely noticed. I literally can’t stress how weird this is for me – I have never, ever, ever been able to focus on a film like this. Maybe it was because of the relief of hearing the first bit of English in about 4 days, thinking back on it. But I like musicals anyway, and I like Ryan Gosling, so it could have been the film.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen it, watch it. I think every shot is great, you’ll watch it and think every other shot is poster-worthy. Unless you like crying through films. Have you seen the ending? Jesus. Like, Jesus. It would have been less sad if they had both died. My heart breaks just thinking about it. I feel myself welling up every time I think about that bit at the end where Seb plays that song, and Mia walks up to him to tell him how much she enjoys his music and he just kisses her – and I’m actually crying. Writing that has made me actually cry. Tragic.

And it’s not pretty crying either, it’s snotty, hyperventilating, blotchy, hide-your-face ugly crying. Every time I watch it. For hours. I love it. The first time I watched this film I woke up in the night in tears because I was so sad. But it came out on DVD on Monday, and I bought it on Blu-Ray which I don’t usually bother with, and I watched it again, and I loved it just as much as I did the first time.

I don’t know how to write film reviews without revealing the entire plot, but just watch it. Just watch this film!

My rating: 2/5 stars. 

LOL JK, 5/5 obviously. I nearly left it like that but I couldn’t. Its a 5 star film.


Making introductions.

Hello! I’m Alison and this is probably my 100th attempt at a blog, nice to meet you.

I know I’ve got a poor track record for this kind of thing, but I thought it would be nice to have somewhere I can just release everything that I’m thinking, like, what’s that thing that Dumbledore says about his Pensieve?

“I sometimes find, and I am sure you know the feeling, that I simply have too many thoughts and memories crammed into my mind…

At these times… I use the Pensieve. One simply siphons the excess thoughts from one’s mind, pours them into the basin, and examines them at one’s leisure. It becomes easier to spot patterns and links, you understand, when they are in this form.”

So that’s kind of what this is about. I’ve got this running joke that I have a lot on my plate, despite the fact that I have almost nothing on my plate. I’m just the sort of person who feels totally overwhelmed by nothing.

The real reason I guess, for myself writing this blog, is to have something to do. I’ve had these completely overwhelming feelings of boredom and like… I just have to do something, all. the. time. It’s exhausting. And writing a blog makes me feel like I’m doing something. Am I divulging too much? I feel like I am, but this is literally why I made this blog, so I’ll have to get used to that.

Also my life is changing pretty fast right now, which is good news. I have a job interview tomorrow, for a job I think I’d really like. I’ve (secretly) been eating vegan for the last 2 months, which I’m enjoying. I’ve started running (!) for the first time since I was literally forced to do it in P.E when I was 15, as I stupidly signed up for the 5km Pretty Muddy race when I was feeling impulsive and I don’t want to embarrass myself on the day. Which is actually… alright? I’m going back to University in a few months, I want to travel the world for the first time in my life, I’m moving in with my boyfriend in August and I even nearly went to the Doctors the other day!

I dunno, I guess I just wanted somewhere to put this all. Maybe I could put my new recipes on here? Review my days out? Let you know about my new job, or how University is going, or what the Doctor says if I ever turn up. Or I could just show you how gross and sweaty I am after running for 90 seconds. Nice.

Okay, well… thanks for listening! I’m actually going out tonight, which I don’t do often. (CHANGE.) I’m going to one of the Brighton Fringe events, it’s called For the Birds, and it’s pretty shrouded in secret, which is pretty cool. I’ll let you know how it goes later. Talk then!
